Kukaku Shiba is the middle child of the Shiba family. She grew up with a great admiration of her older brother, Kaien, and had always played a maternal role to her younger brother Ganju in spite of the fact that she was not the best of role models. When Kaien left the house to become a shinigami, Kukaku took up running it in his place, though she did not become the official head of the Shiba house until after his passing and then somehow got the family stripped of its title as a noble house.

Both Kukaku and Ganju were devastated by the loss of their brother Kaien, and grew distrustful of Shinigami due to the fact that Kaien was killed by a member of his own division -- Rukia Kuchiki. Kukaku, shortly after, learned from Juushiro Ukitake, her brother's Captain, about the circumstances of her brothers death an the pain and resentment that Rukia went through over it. Having that knowledge, Kukaku made the decision to forgive Rukia. However she held the information from Ganju, knowing he wouldn't understand until he learned everything for himself.

Kukaku is a strict head of the house, taking on a "my way or the highway" attitude about how things are run. She enforces a 9:00 PM curfew on Ganju and his friends that stay with them. While it is not known exactly what she will do if the curfew is broken, by the way Ganju and his friends react it can easily be assumed to be a harsh punishment. Kukaku is also somewhat infamous for moving her home frequently for unknown reasons (though it is assumed to be because people in the villages in the Rukongai are afraid of her eccentric ways). None the less, her house is always highly recognizable, due to her eccentric designs for entryways.

Kukaku was childhood friends with Yoruichi Shihouin and Kisuke Urahara, who share her lively, eccentric spirit. In her lifetime she has also taken up pyrotechnics, learning enough to give herself the title of the Rukongai's Master Pyrotechnician, though a sign that she had to work for that skill is the absence of her right arm. Her left arm has "sky" tattooed on it as a tribute to her work. She has also built a large cannon, capable of firing large fireworks (or in some cases even people) into the air. Kukaku is still a very proud woman, in spite of her missing limb, and rarely acts as if she's even aware that it's gone. It is not something she laments over in the slightest. Nor does she lament the fact that her family are no longer nobles. She still has a strong sense of loyalty towards Yoruichi and Kisuke and will not refuse them if one or both of them come to her asking a favor.

Kukaku is a fiery woman with a short temper, but she has a soft spot for things that remind her of her family. She is shown to be more quiet and reserved when thinking of Kaien or worrying about Ganju. Family and work are the most important things in her life and she will make whatever sacrifices are necessary to take care of them and keep them safe, regardless of what the law says to do.
